Another Fork in the Road

Grand Canyon 2007

I recently quit my job here in Sweden and travelled to America to visit my family and friends.  More on my trip later.

I quit my job because it was no longer gratifying.  The reasons are not important.  I realize that at this stage in my life I need to do something that makes me happy, gives me satisfaction,  and that my efforts are being rewarded both monetarily and personally.

I am lucky to have the opportunity to try a new endeavor, be it a new job or a business opportunity.

Maybe I will take some time for myself and see what comes.

It is these forks in the road that shapes our lives.  The choices we make and how we react to what we find around the bend is what makes us who we are and how we feel about ourselves.

The Grand Canyon changes your perspective.

I am looking forward to what is around the next bend.

Reading - a favorite pleasure !

It is with pleasure I remember our bathrooms both in Uppsala and in Bromma with those deep marble bathtubs where, especially my Mother would luxuriate!  Submerged in hot water with bubbles and bath oil in little melting jelly capsules or just plain hot water up to her chin, always with a book to read and a cup of steaming tea on the rim of the tub.  My sister and I were always welcome.  We would sit on the floor and talk, trying to solve world problems or simply talk about books or school or how the day went. The subject matter was always different.

No such pleasure for my Grandmother, who had no bathtub and not even hot water in her apartment.  She would come regularly to bathe in ours and we would scrub her back and help her in and out of the tub since the sides were so high.  No reading books then.  Before my Mother moved into the apartment with the tub we would go with my Grandmother to a public bath house where she would bathe and sit in the sauna / the steam room.  Those are also "bathroom memories".  Somehow my love for books and reading started in those bath rooms.

From the time we were very young my sister and I read a lot.  We vowed to each other to read every book in the school library after we moved to Bromma, a suburb close to Stockholm.  It was quite an undertaking.  We started reading the books written by authors who's names started with the letter A.  Every time we returned a book someone else would return a book with the same letter, so getting through the books one author after another took forever.  How far into the alphabet we got I can not recall, we never made it to the Å Ä and Ö:s of that I am sure, but we did have fun trying.

There were the endless "Tarzan" books, the Edith Blyth detective series not to forget, "The Black Stallion",  also a series of several books.  The rule was to finish a book even if it was boring or not to our liking,  a rule that I do not completely follow today.  If a book somewhere in its early stages does not "grab" me I can put it aside today without feeling guilty, realizing there are too many good books to read, why waste ones time on something that is not interesting and does not allow an escape nor hold ones interest.  Today I have two or three books being read at the same time, something I never did earlier.  Today I have a book next to the "princess tub", one in the "stone room", as well as one on the armrest of our sofa here in the kitchen / dining / family room.

Currently I am reading John Irving's "Last Night In Twisted River",  Siri Hustvedt's "What I Loved" with a smidgeon of David Wroblewski's "The Story Of Edgar" thrown in.  Since I don't want it to end,  I am sucking on it like a lemon drop!

As mentioned a while back one of our neighbors wrote a book titled "Friska Fåglar Flyger" or Healthy Birds Fly.  The authors name is Bo Laestadius.  I ordered the book from our local book store and I just finished reading it.  It is a book dealing with "burn out" and his journey of ten years of difficulty accepting his fate with illness, insomnia,  hives,  and many other stress related symptoms.  Along with a bit of perhaps loss of  "identity".  I can relate,  remembering giving up my job as a Buyer at Hewlett Packard,  a job that made me feel important!  Before that Buyer position I was merely an Assembler,  or a Gold Ball Bonder,  or a Line Lead!  Bo Laestadius did not start in the "mail room" so to speak,  nor did I come close to the amount of money he made,  nor the fame and success.  But yes,  I do understand the loss of identity.  Bo also struggled with "keeping up with the neighbors",  in dealing with the Swedish Jealousy and Envy.  That is a disease that seems epidemic here as I see it.  I feel it,  see it,  and experience it up close and personal often,  much to my dismay.  I do not understand it!  This amount of envy is written about in books,  essays,  blogs,  and plays!  A class warfare of sorts.

Keeping up gets tuff...... Bigger houses,  more stuff,  working and working more, neglecting both himself, family and relationships, never feeling satisfied and happy,  unable to sleep.  Yep, sort of the typical American Model.

Not being able to say NO, taking on responsibilities and big projects adding to the MUST DO list just adds to the insurmountable stress level.

Ultimately coming to the conclusion that it is the small and simple things that are important.  The struggle out of depression and getting  the motivation  for living a life without being the one "running the entire show",  allowing himself just "to be" it is an intricate journey.  Written in beautiful verbiage and very poetically.  It is amazing how hard we can be on ourselves.  Placing the bar for personal success so high it becomes totally unobtainable!

For a person especially a man here in this society, to be so honest about his feelings, to actually say what he feels and what he thinks for everyone to see,  is very refreshing to me.  This is not a society where that is common.  Here you buck  up, stiff upper lip, you "feel fine" even when you don't.

Don't ask for praise and or encouragement.  That is something only given to children and imbeciles I have been told.

For us who are used to people cheering each other on we find this lack of support difficult to live with.  It is not only us who feel this way, but apparently Bo has experienced this as I would think other people here have.  Speak your heart!  That would be good advice to follow.  Don't just shove what you feel down.  Don't  forget to give yourself some room to do what YOU want.  Be kind.  Let's "lift each other up"!   Of course there are those who never learned how......... sad!  Poor insensitive souls.

Reading this last book,  it's words have given me some  insight into a mans very difficult journey through life with all it's expectations.  What seemed totally dark and black gives way to hope and light.  An ending with much  hope for brighter days ahead.

This  authors desire is to help others.  To keep someone else from staying on "the hamster wheel" too long.  To stop the "workaholic behavior" before  total burn out has set in.

I learned a bit more about  the human condition and the common humanity encompassing the experience of being human in a social, cultural and personal context.  What complex individuals we are.

A life without books.......No Way.  Now I'll go sit in the tub.

Quit the news & the paper. Just Sing Along at Skansen

When I see, read and watch the cruelty and injustice that is happening both far away and around me it is difficult to not react.  Some say it is not "my thing" no, it is not MY problem, no I should NOT get involved.  Is that the right way to be??  No I do not think so.  Both on a personal level and just in general it is hard not to have thoughts and views on some of the various situations.

Just watched a T V program regarding violence on the streets of London, well not only on the streets, also on the bus and in the subway.  People being severely beaten up, some actually killed by individuals, couples and groups of crazy people for seemingly no reason. What is wrong with these people?

Perhaps I should stop watching the news?

Reading the paper each morning here I wonder does it happen as often there, in the U S, as here?  All this violence ?  Yes I have wondered before.  Do old ladies get knocked off their walkers and their purses ripped off as often in New York as in Helsingborg?  These kinds of crimes are perhaps too insignificant to write about in the New Your Times unless some one gets severely hurt ? I just want to know.  And then where does all this anger come from?  How can you, at the age of between 14  to  20 years have so much fury?  How can a person  do this  to some ones (perhaps their  friends) Grandmother? Young kids stomp in to the little shops in a group here in Helsingborg and demand the cash in the cash drawer. The shopkeeper turns the money over to them.  If they are caught they go unpunished because they are too young to be held accountable. It is pretty sad.

Should I stop reading the newspaper?

Other headlines of course are really funny to me. People work too much overtime I read yesterday and therefore suffer greatly from stress. Read that in the headlines in the U S ?  Yes of course working overtime becomes stress full, we did all the time, (no wonder we are the way we are),  as do loads of people, no lunch, no break or whatever. Guess we just did not see it in the headlines of the San Jose Mercury News.

Yet another hilarious big issue here is dog poop! The opinion pages here are filled with complaints about just dog poop. Not picked up,  or picked up but placed in a garbage can too close to the bus stop or  picked up and placed in the WRONG garbage can or thrown along  with  it's plastic bag at the side of the road or.......... In Madrid, Spain they had "poop patrol" workers on motor scooters with vacuum tanks! Pretty wild. No one there seemed to bother picking up after their dog at all. Perhaps the citizens of Madrid wrote to the editor in the paper too. I did not read the news there.

No, I must  stop this ! I think I am going to get my neighbors together and start a Bread Baking Circle and STOP the paper!  Shall call them tomorrow. It would absolutely be more fun ! Maybe I'll throw out the T V too. We could have a "Bread Baking and Bitching Session".  I'll take that back since I am the only one "bitching", no one else does that here.  Just me. Here everyone stays calm, makes no waves, no matter what!   Bread or no bread.........

Requiem to Kitty Bosse

He will not be waiting by the glass door.  He will not rub against my leg, looking up at me begging for that herring.  Nor will he sleep next to Ralle and David for an after the dinner snooze as he so often did.

He went exploring just like Columbus did.  Christopher Columbus left from Port of Palos in Spain, to go looking for "The New World".  Bosse left from the Palos home, not exactly a port but still his harbor, to seek bigger and more exciting things like fatter mice and new territories.

While Linnea was here he slept first IN her suitcase.  Then she decided that closing the lid was a good idea, so he slept on top of it.  It was also great to trim the claws on, that suitcase.  Then he left one night and was gone for several days.  Worry, worry, worry we did as so many times before, starting with the May trip to Uppsala, now seemingly such a long time ago.  His times away varied from a night or two, to ten days or so.

He was "fixed" so as to not go searching for ladies, he had a number tattooed in his ear, registered with the Swedish Kennel Registry so if lost and found he would be returned to us, hopefully.  Or at the least we would be notified if he was found.

Well, Linnea left, her suitcase with cat hair attached!  Once she was in the air we distributed fliers all around our area, concentrating on the little village of Mjöhult a couple of miles away.  emma (with a small e) had mentioned that she had seen Bosse there.  I had seen him come from that direction on a few occasions, but had hoped he was not wondering THAT far away!  After placing fliers with Bosses picture in well over  a 100 mailboxes and on some of the bulletin boards in the village, we received calls.  A young woman had reportedly "hit" a cat by that description with her car.  We were guided to the spot where the accident occurred and sure enough, there he was our "explorer".  No mistaking those markings even though................

No, no one took the time to look for any I D markings, ( even though it is common to tattoo here ) so our helping was not in the cards.  Why did he wonder so far away? Why could he not have stayed in the near by fields hunting for mice?  Why did he have to be at the side of or on the road?

He was a cat with a super personality.  Shining coat, happy disposition, a joy to live with and love!  We miss him much.  Funny how such a small being can get so BIG. Ralle his best friend mourns him too. Somehow I still look for him at the glass door even though I KNOW he is not going to be there.

Farewell Bosse. Bet you found another world!  Yet you will be part of ours for a long time.

A tribute to a life well lived and loved.

What does one do?

Suddenly extremely empty around here! Several things were attempted in an effort to stave off the empty and the lonely feeling, some more successfully than other.
Walk the beautiful dog!
Weed whack!
Cook Soup with early summer veggies!
Pull weeds!
Make a Peach Tart!
Have lunch in the sun!
Walk the dog!

Linnea is back where she belongs.  We Skyped Friday morning........ what a miraculous medium, the computer!  Found out all is well in central California.

Fredrik too is back in work mode.  In good old So.Cal seems he is way too far away just of a sudden!  The children and their Mom will be spending the rest of the summer in Southern Sweden, so hopefully we will have more opportunities to be together.

The little "rug rats" were here for  a couple of short visits, one of which the parents went off to celebrate a wedding anniversary ALONE.  Went to dinner and actually ate while the food was warm, imagine that!

Student sailing ships.
Two were in Helsingborg for the day.
What an adventure for the students.

Days pass all too quickly, the countryside is absolutely wonderful.  Walking in Jonstorp this morning along the water, continuing through the old shrimp fishing village with gardens around the quaint little houses in full bloom, so abundant with color and fragrance it is breathtaking!

Jonstorp.  The water is cool.
Jonstorp.  A boat would be nice sometimes.
Near Viken.  Coastal meadows.
Always amazing.
Can sit here for hours.
Always changing.
Always new.

Glorious weather.  Perfect!  Tomorrow will be a good day to wash the bedding and hang the sheets to dry in the sun and the wind.

Maud comes next.  Can't wait!

That is it for now, "Love what is"  as Rich said, since there is nothing else......

The Visit

Oh joy!  It was just way too short we thought, yet realize how lucky we were to have had her here at all.
There were many walks with Ralle, we went on a few little trips, checked out some nice parks and lucky for us you do not have to go far to do that.  Some shopping was done here and there, at Väla, at Råå, as well as in Helsingborg.  A speed trip to Copenhagen, Denmark for window shopping primarily.
There was a Student Fest to attend, a movie to see with a friend, a pizza night, a party at the beach, a dinner in Nyhamnsläge, among some of the highlights.  Hard for us "old fogies" to stay up so late.  It used to be so easy, didn't it?

Loved every second! Want more! Soon !
Who's  next ?
